Reading Your Way To Happiness!
I don’t know about you … but I LOVE to read. I have a problem finding time to set aside to read however.
Well okay, time is an issue but so is the fact that reading inevitably puts me to sleep. I don’t know what it is … the left / right eye movement? The brain dead factor since I’m usually reading at night or maybe it’s the warm green tea I’m usually sipping. Either way … reading is usually sleepy time for me.
Since I’m always looking at ways to be more efficient and I’m always multi-tasking, I decided to give Audible.com (affiliate link) a try. Audible is basically a books on tape type of format. Except it’s all digital and all done through the power of Amazon. My theory originally was to listen to books while I drove long distances. However, I found that the whole “sleepy” issue came up in this scenerio and let’s face it – sleepy while driving isn’t cool.
I now listen to audible while I clean. Yep, while I’m cleaning the kitchen, loading the dishwasher or doing laundry, I’m listening away on my bluetooth headphones to Audible.
That being said, when I say “Reading” in my blog post title … we all now know that my version of reading = listening! I will say that I’ve “read” a lot more books as of late and cleaning seems to go a bit faster.
Ever since I’ve decided to write my book I’ve been intrigued by the subject of Happiness. Not just “how to be happy” and all the self-help that goes with it, but the psychology of it all. Are we the reason we are or are not happy? Is it our environment that makes us happy? Is it simply a choice of being happy?
So through recommendations and Amazon browsing, I have a list of books that may or may not help. Either way – I think they’re interesting reads and I wanted to share them with you!
10% Happier: This was recommended to me by a former client. He stated that he currently puts this on a “to do” list for all his new clients coming into his consulting firm. I decided to give it a shot. It’s all about one man’s quest to tame that inner “asshole” voice we all have. I think you’ll find Dan Harris’s pursuit admirable as well as interesting. It’s an honest and insightful read.
Infinite possibilities: If you have ever signed up for the ever popular mailing list Notes From The Universe” … this is a read for you! It’s the whole life look at life with Mike Dooley and it gives you more insight into the how behind TUT.com as well. Some of his theories may leave you squinting your eyes in a “what now?” look at the beginning of this book – but I can guarantee that you’ll find this book inspirational to your life!
The Five Love Languages: Dating …. oh the dating game. I say “game” because every time I go on another date I think … “All’s fair in Love and War!”. This is a great book for anyone in a relationship that may have a few bumps in it. Some people will scoff at the book and others will embrace it. Personally – I see the logic in this book and I have to say, it’s caused me to look at individuals differently. There is the whole theory of “give first” in this book and I have a few reservations about that – but I’m in the dating game portion of my life – not the married game. So perhaps I should read 5 love languages for singles to give me a better insight personally. Either way – there are some great insights to this book by Gary Chapman.
Shake: Then for some fun on my list and let’s face it … as CEO of Taster’s Circle, I need to be reading on things in my industry. “Shake” is written by Eric Prum and Josh Williams. The simple feel of this book makes it a fun read. When I say “read” on this one … I really mean “read” because as a cocktail recipe book – it’s not on audible. This book brings great visual entertainment with it’s use of creative recipe photos and let’s face it … they use a mason jar cocktail shaker. The mason jar cocktail shaker makes it even more cool and hip! Cocktails are provided according to seasons and I have never thought of adding concord grapes to my St. Germain … but these guys have! … and they made me break down and
want need a mason jar cocktail shaker for myself!
So there you are … a few of my “Happiness Books” that I wanted to share with you. Have you read any of these? Have another one to suggest? Would love to hear about them in the comments below!
Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to sip my Rosemary Maple Bourbon Sour (recipe in the book “Shake”) and do a little reading / cleaning….
