New Media: To fear or be feared?

by Jennifer Stinnett on February 19, 2009

I’ve had the wonderful opportunity to speak to a lot of brokers and agents regarding new media and it’s “trend”. New media (or social media) is here to stay and is finding itself very intigrated into our business modules.

Take for instance Ford Motors: Ford has an incredibly savvy Social Media Director Scott Monty working for them. We mutually follow each other on Twitter so I occasionally get to see some of his posts. This guy takes the heat….. and takes it well. He addresses customer complaints and follows through for customer satisfaction.

Check out this great inteview on Fox Business News with Scott Monty and Michael Howard from kwibox.com

As I speak to realtors … I hear and “feel” a common concern. Fear. Fear of non-privacy, fear of losing control over clients, fear of losing control over their listings, fear of working for “free” and fear of fear!

To which I reply:
“Remember those MLS books that held all the listings that only agents could tap into and no one else could see?…. what happend to those books when the internet started to showcase that same information? …fear was in the heart of Real Estate Agents …. what would happen? how is it possible for us to do business if EVERYONE can see the listing information? We’ll lose control!! Guess what … Realtors and Brokerages are still here.”

I’m constantly easing agent and broker fears of supplying too much information about themselves or about their business. The truth is… with New Media… you MUST show yourself. If you don’t …. how will we find you? how will we know you? where is your online reputation when everyone is online.

Don’t go by the way of the old MLS books …. get on a social media site and try it out… and remember my favorite saying: Target, Engage, Scrub and Convert. The more people in your pipeline…. the better your conversion odds!

People first folks!
Jennifer
